Literature presents the teenager as someone who is maybe confused or unsure and needs to find their path in life. For example, in Siddhartha, by Hermann Hesse, Siddhartha is confused on which path to take in his life that will lead him to happiness. He goes through many different religions and teachers in order to find what will help him reach the happiness, but realizes that he needs to find his identity on his own. “What is it that you wanted to learn from teachings and teachers, and although they taught you much, what was it they could not teach you? And he thought: It was Self, the character and nature of which I wished to learn” (38 Siddhartha). Some of us are lost and need to rely on our instincts, rather than what people tell us to do in order to find our happiness or path to the future. Siddhartha sees that only he could help himself find his identity and his path in life. Siddhartha’s goal is to be able to find himself and is ready to face the many challenges to come to reaching his goal.
