How does the literature present the teen?
In Antigone by Sophocles, the teenager is portrayed as someone who stands up for their beliefs despite the consequences and someone who likes to follow their beliefs and does not let authority get in the way. For instance, Antigone represents the teenager when she goes against authority and decides to bury her brother when she says, “I’ll still bury him. It would be fine to die / while doing that. I’ll lie there with him,” (Prologue 89-90). Antigone displays how teens are very passionate about their beliefs and Antigone does not want to let her brother have an improper burial. Teens often ignore the consequences of their actions and stand up for their beliefs. The literature is illustrating that teens are very headstrong and that they do not want anything to get in the way of their beliefs. In conclusion, Antigone represents the teenager when she tells her sister that she is going to do what she thinks is right when she says, “Yes. But he’s no right to keep me from what’s mine” (Prologue 61). Antigone wants to give her brother the proper burial he deserves and she is not going to let authority get in the way of that. Antigone represents the teenager by illustrating how teens are very stubborn and they want to follow their beliefs over authority. Teens have a tendency to believe that what they do is always right and they always want to follow what they believe is right. Teens will not let authority get in the way of their beliefs. Antigone by Sophocles illustrates teenagers as stubborn individuals who follow their beliefs and individuals who do not want authority to stand in the way of their beliefs.
Does the literature get it right? Are teens better represented now than in the literature?
The literature is accurate with the way teens are represented in society today. Teens stand up for their beliefs today despite the consequences because teens believe they are right. Teens tend to go with what they think is right over others because they do not care about authority's opinion and the consequences. Teens are very persistent and voice their own opinion. Teens also are very vocal about their opinions because of their headstrong personality trait.
